Tonight I was able to recognise the talents of students at St Pius X College in Parliament in a Community Recognition Statement. This is what I said:
I am delighted to recognise the achievements of Frankie Parris and Cooper Lloyd, who are both students from StPiusX College, Adamstown, in my electorate of Charlestown.
Thanks to Frankie and Cooper, StPius College is the first winner of the new award for Song Writing School of the Year in the Australian Children's Music Foundation National Song Writing Competition.
Their song, which is entitled Unplug and Connect, encourages us to unplug from technology and connect with friends and family. The opening words of their song are:
Everybody always looking down at their devices,
That is one sign that humans are going through a crisis.
Get off the screens, it's now or never,
There isn't a lot of time to spend together.
The college has received a prize of $5,000 which has been spent on purchasing new musical instruments.
It is a great prize honouring a talented pair of students with an important message.
