Olympic Pathway School

21 September 2023

Ms JODIE HARRISON (Charlestown—Minister for Women, Minister for Seniors, and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault)— As of 11 September, Hunter Sports High School is an official Australian Olympic Pathway School! Australian Olympic Pathway School status is available to schools who have an established elite athlete development sport program including Olympic sports.

To be recognised as an Australian Olympic Pathway School, a school must meet strict criteria at the discretion of the Australian Olympic Committee. Students at the Olympic Pathway Schools are given access to high-quality sport training environments, sports academies, accredited coaches, support services such as wellbeing, nutrition and more, as well as crucial formal pathways through to high performance teams with sports bodies.

In 2032, when Brisbane hosts Australia's next Olympic Games, it is remarkable to think that some of those sportspeople could be training at Hunter Sports High right now. Seeing those Olympic rings at the school gates will be an ongoing inspiration to this enormously talented cohort.

Congratulations to the school, and to principal Rachel Byrne, who accepted the official plaque from the Australian Olympic Committee's James Edwards.

A Community Recognition Notice is an opportunity for an MP to submit a short statement praising the work of an individual or group in the local community. If you have any ideas about people I can recognise with a Community Recognition Notice, please email and let me know!
