Life guards in the pink

16 February 2022

Ms JODIE HARRISON (Charlestown)—Visitors to the beautiful Redhead Beach in the Charlestown Electorate on Friday 7 January would have spotted our fantastic local life guards wearing pink.

On that day, life guards donned their pink shirts to raise awareness of the McGrath Foundation and the invaluable work they do funding breast care nurses. 1 in 7 women are diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime, and approximately 55 Australians are diagnosed each and every day-which adds up to about 20,000 Australians diagnosed with breast cancer each year.

Lake Macquarie City Council senior lifeguard Lucas Samways, who lost his mum Sharon to the illness in January 2019, said that he hopes that by wearing pink he and his mates will encourage women everywhere to get regular breast cancer check-ups. Early detection is vital, and I thank Lucas and his colleagues for helping to raise awareness. I would also like to thank the McGrath Foundation for their incredible work.

A Community Recognition Notice is an opportunity for an MP to submit a short statement praising the work of an individual or group in the local community. If you have any ideas about people I can recognise with a Community Recognition Notice, please email and let me know!
