First time final for ParaMatildas

17 May 2022

Ms JODIE HARRISON (Charlestown) (16:56): Last week in this place I wished the very best to the ParaMatildas for their upcoming competition in Spain, and especially my cousin and their number 5, Lainee Harrison, who attends Hunter Sports High School.

The ParaMatildas will be contesting the gold‑medal match against the USA tonight. It will be the first International Federation of Cerebral Palsy Football Women's World Cup title to be awarded. The team is in the top two of the competition. It is fantastic to see the Australian team perform so well.

Highlights from the competition include three wins in a row: 11‑nil against host country Spain, 4‑nil against Japan and 12‑nil against The Netherlands. I wish the team the best of luck tonight.

The USA team is going in as favourite after winning its last match‑up in the group stages 4‑nil. Whether or not the ParaMatildas bring home the gold, their achievements in this tournament have been outstanding. I congratulate the team and local young woman Lainee on their efforts.
