Ms JODIE HARRISON (Charlestown—Minister for Women, Minister for Seniors, and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault)— Thursday 31 August marked the thirty-seventh Daffodil Day, and I dropped in to see local volunteers at Westfield Kotara as they worked to raise funds for cancer research on behalf of Cancer Council NSW.
There was wonderful support from shoppers who flocked to the bright daffodil display. Due to investment in cancer research, amazing advances have been made in cancer prevention, screening, early detection and treatment – helping to increase survival rates from 51 per cent in the late 1980s to around 70 per cent today.
It is thanks to fundraisers like these that so many of these advances have occurred. Cancer Council staff members Ali Cooke, Sue Russell and Dani Foster, Daffodil Centre researcher Chelsea Carle, and Evaluation Lead Erica James were on the stall in Kotara, supported by volunteers. Lauren Kempe from NBN News and the Hit Network were roving the centre to bring shoppers to the stall. I want to thank Ali, Sue, Dani, Chelsea, Erica and the volunteers for being so welcoming and working so hard, and all those who stopped by. This is such an important cause.
