Ms JODIE HARRISON (Charlestown)— When the Bill Turner Cup finals were contested in Lake Macquarie on 6 September, the competition was top notch.
I was very excited to see Hunter Sports High School captain Alex Nunes had been off honing his skills around the school this year, training in Portugal with some of the best up-and-coming footballers in the world.
The Bill Turner Cup is an amazing tribute to Booragul school teacher Bill Turner and is the pinnacle of school football, attracting teams from NSW, Qld, the ACT and Victoria. Hunter Sports High played Endeavour Sports High at 3.30pm on 6 September, battling it out for a place in the grand final the next day. Unfortunately, after a nail-biter of a game, Hunter Sports went down 2-1 to Endeavour Sports. Endeavour player Stepan Markovski scored the first goal at the eight-minute mark, while Hunter Sports' Makye Buettner scored early in the first half.
The match came down to over-time, with a Golden Goal at the 74‑minute mark clinching the win for Endeavour. Congratulations to Alex, Makye and their teammates for their extraordinary athleticism and skill, and to coach Scott McCarter for leading their fantastic campaign.
