Charlestown Swim Centre

19 November 2024

Ms JODIE HARRISON (Charlestown—Minister for Women, Minister for Seniors, and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault)—Today, I'd like to recognise the Charlestown Swim Centre's remarkable Splash of Colour program, an innovative learn-to-swim initiative that is making waves in our community. This free, 12-week program, launched in February 2023, provides culturally sensitive swim lessons tailored for international women of all ages. For many participants, it's their first time learning to swim, and often, they are the first in their families to take this step. Nine nationalities are represented in the course's current class, with women from Kenya, Zimbabwe, India, Peru, China, Venezuela, Rwanda, Nigeria, and Colombia taking part. Due to its success, Splash of Colour has expanded beyond Charlestown, with classes now available in Lake Macquarie, Maitland, the Central Coast, and Newcastle. Congratulations to Charlestown Swim Centre for fostering inclusion and water safety in our diverse community through this life-changing program. I would also like to acknowledge the program's founder, Ennia Jones, whose holistic approach to learning to swim has made all the difference for so many local women of culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
