Ms JODIE HARRISON (Charlestown—Minister for Women, Minister for Seniors, and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault)—13-year-old Charlestown junior athletics star Callum Martin has a clear goal in mind: he wants to represent his country at the Olympics. Callum's chosen sport is walking, and it looks like he's well on his way to achieving his goal.
In April, he took the gold in the under‑13 3km walk at the 2024 Australian Junior Championships in Adelaide. A student of Hunter Sports High, Callum not only won the race by a minute but achieved a personal best time—walking three kilometres in 13 minutes and thirty-three seconds!
He is a member of the Adamstown New Lambton Athletics Club, which is where he first discovered his walking prowess. Two years on, and he is going from strength to strength in the sport. Callum puts his success down not only to his innate ability, but his hard work, singling out his coach Joanne McGinniskin for all her support. Callum's mum, Marissa, reckons good hip flexibility helps as well!
Congratulations, Callum, and I wish you all the best. Fingers crossed we'll be seeing you on the track at Los Angeles 2028 or Brisbane 2032!
