WORKERS WITH DISABILITIES DISTRAUGHT OVER NEW BUS TIMETABLE DEBACLE

Member for Charlestown, Jodie Harrison today met with a number of parents of people with intellectual disabilities who use public transport to get to their workplaces in Lambton and Hamilton.

These young people have been experiencing severe distress because of the changes to the transport system that came into effect last Sunday.

Ms Harrison said she was deeply concerned at the number of calls she was receiving from her electorate regarding the impact the changed timetable and bus routes was having on some of the most vulnerable members of her community.

The stories I heard today from the parents who had taken months to train their children on when and where to catch a bus so they could go and work were heartbreaking, Ms Harrison said.

Some of them have given up their jobs because it is just too difficult for them to be travel trained on the new routes.

These young people have lost their independence, social interaction and money all because of these outrageous changes to our public transport system.

I call on the Minister for Transport, Andrew Constance, to step in and find a solution for these commuters with disabilities.
