MEDIA RELEASE: Extreme Withdrawal Rorts in Early Childhood Learning

05 January 2020

Today I circulated a media release about the current crisis in the Early Childhood Learning sector about extreme withdrawal rorts.

JODIE HARRISON MP

LABOR SHADOW MINISTER FOR EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION

NSW GOVERNMENT MUST CRACK DOWN ON EXTREME CHILDCARE WITHDRAWAL RORTS

The NSW Labor Opposition is calling on the Government to crack down on extreme terms and conditions around bonds and withdrawal periods across the childcare sector after reports in the media revealed some childcare centres requiring extremely long notice periods, refusing to return refundable bonds, and continuing to charge parents after withdrawing their children.

These unnecessary and onerous conditions are just another impost on parents across NSW who are already struggling with cost of living pressures as wages continue to stagnate and families are being hit with rising tolls and higher public transport fares thanks to the Berejiklian Government.

Labor Shadow Minister for Early Childhood Education Jodie Harrison said: "These onerous terms are simply about revenue raising and supplanting the income streams of some unethical childcare providers and reflect badly on the wider industry, which is mostly trying to do the right thing."

"The Government needs to make sure that childcare services are actually working for families across NSW. These rorts are just another sign that the Government has taken it's eye off the ball."

"These revelations come after criticism of Minister Mitchell following her governments lax controls which became obvious with the exposure of rorts throughout privately operated family daycare services and two recent child deaths in the sector.
