Here is the grim reality, in numbers: one-third of all women and girls experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime, half of women killed worldwide were killed by their partners or family, and violence perpetrated against women is as common a cause of death and incapacity for those of reproductive age, as cancer, and a greater cause of ill health than road accidents and malaria combined.
Today, as we mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women 2019, I want to thank all of those organisations and groups in our local community supporting women who have experienced violence, and I promise to do all that I can in Parliament to bring about legislation that will help to eradicate violence against women and girls in our society.
