Today I have joined with my colleague Greg Warren MP,Shadow Minister for Local Government , to demand that the NSW Liberals and Nationals make a genuine effort to stop shopping trolleys being dumped throughout NSW communities.
A number of councils have raised concerns regarding the issue, however the Berejiklian Government continues to sit on its hands regarding the matter.
Greg Warren called on the Liberals and Nationals to introduce constructive changes to address the issue. Member for Charlestown, Jodie Harrison said the dumped trolleys were not only an eyesore but also a safety hazard.
The Minister for Local Government and her Liberal-National colleagues are aware of the problem of dumped shopping trolleys, but they refuse to take any proactive steps to address it Mr Warren said.
Trolleys are there for one purpose to transport goods from the store to the car. They are not a mode of transport or a landmark. The government needs to hold the owners of the shopping trolleys responsible and give more powers to councils so they can clean up our streets.
Member for Charlestown, Jodie Harrison added: Unfortunately, dumped shopping trolleys are an all too familiar sight in our community. Clearly the current penalties for dumping a trolley are not serving as a deterrent. The government needs to stop stalling and take action to rid our streets of these eyesores.
