The NSW Labor Opposition is calling on the Berejiklian Liberal Government to immediately investigate the regulation of early childhood education services in NSW following ABC revelations that a six month old baby died in a Randwick Family Day Care centre earlier this year.
The case exemplifies NSW Labors concerns regarding the assessment and regulation of early childhood education services in NSW and the commitment of the NSW Government to ensure quality early education and care for children and families.
Labor Shadow Minister for Early Childhood Learning, Jodie Harrison was appalled that the Government had kept news of the death a secret since March which has only been exposed because of investigative work done by ABC journalists.
A death of a child in an early childhood education service is highly concerning, particularly if there are questions around the quality of the service in the first place, Ms Harrison said.
In recent months we have seen the exposure of child care subsidy fraud in family day care, and now we have the tragedy of a babys death.
Kidstart Family Day Care was given a low rating when assessed back in 2015 and had still not been re-assessed by the Government nearly 4 years later.
The National Guidelines clearly state that a service rated as Working Towards which is the rating the centre in question received should be re-assessed within 12 months.
This is simply not happening in NSW. It is the Governments job to ensure quality is being provided by early childhood education services and they are just not doing that.
The death of this baby is a tragic example of the Governments lackadaisical attitude to early childhood learning in this State.
