Proposed upgrades to Hillsborough Road are moving ahead, with tenders called for today for the detailed design for Stage 1 of the project.
Member for Charlestown Jodie Harrison MP said this upgrade is a huge win for the 36,000 motorists who use Hillsborough Road daily and for our electorate of Charlestown.
“It will improve safety and reduce local congestion while providing a welcome boost in the local economy," Minister Harrison said.
“Once the upgrade is complete, it’s expected that commuters will save up to four minutes in travel time during the morning and afternoon peaks due to reduced congestion.”
The NSW Government is providing $35 million to construct upgrades to the 1.8-kilometre stretch of road, from the Newcastle Inner City Bypass roundabout to the existing duplication west of Crockett Street.
Transport for NSW sought feedback from the community on the concept design and environmental assessment in November 2022, with the submissions report published in August 2023.
Timing for construction of the remaining stages is subject to project approvals and funding.
Tender for the detailed design of the upgrade will open on Friday 10 November and closes on Friday 15 December.
